Last time, we decimated (approval requests for) the spam comments by simply changing the settings in our Administrator's Dashboard. Visitors are now required to register before they can post any comments. Of course, setting barriers like this makes giving feedback a burden to the occasional visitor. It does not take long before reality sinks in: your mailbox is quickly cluttered with messages from your blogging software, asking you to approve a comment, delete it, or mark it as spam. Updating WordPress

The need to upgrade you WordPress installation is just a matter of time. Especially bug fixes and security patches require you to move to the next version as soon as possible. Fortunately, WordPress made upgrading very easy.

Of course, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the WordPress site. That way, you will know when a new version becomes available. This is especially important when it comes to security updates, just like version 3.0.4 that was released last month. As the message states, this is a very important update to apply to your sites as soon as possible because it fixes a core security bug in the HTML sanitation library, called KSES. I would rate this release as 'critical'.

If you want to start your own blog, WordPress is the way to go. Of course, there are other software packages available that can be deployed for blogging, but WordPress is the de facto standard now.

In this article we describe a basic installation and configuration. Later on we will build further on this foundation, using contributed plugins available from the WordPress website.
